Design Bathroom from 1969

15 01 2010

We love this Italian article from 1969 which featured the bathroom of the feature „tutto in plexiglass il bagno del futuro”. Everything in plexiglass plastic. This bathroom seems like something you could imagine seeing in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001. Everything is rounded, glossy and modern. And we love the deep orange color.

In the late 1990’s we visited an old bank building in Long Island City (Queens), New York, just across the Queens Borough Bridge. The entire building was for lease so we had a chance to visit it. In the cellar of this bank building was a untouched bathroom from the late 1960’s which had a label from Rohm and Haas. It appeared it had never been used. All the walls, shower, washing basin, toilet, etc were flowing into each other. Entirely made of the same plexiglass material or perhaps fiberglass. Incredibly modern. If you like modern design from this period, you should do a search for designers like Ettore Sottsass, Joe Colombo, Archigram, Archizoom, Eero Aarnio, Eero Saarinen, Superstudio, Artemide, Maurice Kalka, Maurer-Becker, Braun, Arthur Bracegirdle, Zanuso and Sapper, Cazenave, Casati and Ponzio, Superstudio, Peter Ghyczy, Wendell Castle, Kartell, Guzzini, Memphis, AVMazzega, Brionvega, Zanotta, Courreges, Pierre Cardin, Dieter Rams, Verner Panton, etc. Or visit nova68 for modern design still in production today.
